Rottnest Island Tours
Rottnest Island – or ‘Rotto’, as it’s affectionately known by the 100 or so locals – is a beautiful island located about 18 kilometres (11 mi) west of Fremantle. At only 19 square kilometres (7.3 sq. mi) in size, you’d expect there to be little interest in such a small area; however, this tiny island packs a very large punch, with a whopping 500,000 visitors enjoying this amazing place every year!
Referred to as Wadjemup by the local Noongar Indigenous people, Rottnest Island is a sand island with an A-class rating, which means it has the highest level of protection of its unique flora and fauna. The island grows three endemic tree species (most notably, the Rottnest Island Pine) and its most famous resident – the adorable Quokka – is found on the island, as well as only about two other places. In fact, many visitors to the island come solely for the purpose of seeing this elusive little marsupial! Ironically, the island was originally named Rotte nest (‘rat's nest’) by Willem de Vlamingh, who did so based on the large population of Quokkas on the island in 1696. Sharing the spotlight with the Quokkas are colonies of Australian sea lions and southern fur seals, as well as a number of rare or endangered birds.
Besides Rottnest Island’s wonderful wildlife, visitors also come for the gorgeous crystal-water beaches, alluring landscapes, pink salt lakes, dramatic shipwrecks (and the accompanying sea life) and quaint island atmosphere, complete with colonial cottages and other buildings dating back to the mid-1800s. There’s so much to do on Rottnest Island, so don’t miss out on your opportunity to visit this spectacular location!
